Description
A cozy, stress-free autumn party drink that combines warm apple cider, rich caramel sauce, and aromatic spices. This easy-to-make punch is customizable with alcohol and perfect for hosting gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon (3.8 liters) apple cider (100% juice or fresh pressed)
- 1 cup (240ml) caramel sauce (salted recommended)
- 2 cups (480ml) apple juice
- 3–4 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise pods
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 4–5 whole cloves
- 1–2 cups (240-480ml) bourbon or dark rum (optional)
- Thin apple slices (for garnish)
- Fresh thyme sprigs (for garnish)
- Cinnamon sticks (for garnish)
Instructions
- Tie cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves together with kitchen twine if desired, or prepare to strain them later.
- Pour apple cider and apple juice into a large stockpot. Warm over medium-low heat until small bubbles appear around the edges (approx. 160°F/70°C), about 10 minutes. Do not boil.
- Add caramel sauce to the warm cider. Whisk vigorously until the caramel is fully emulsified and the liquid is smooth and opaque.
- Add the spice bundle (cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, cloves) to the pot. Simmer on very low heat for 15 minutes to infuse flavors.
- If using alcohol, stir in bourbon or rum now. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to cook off harsh alcohol taste.
- Taste and adjust sweetness or spice levels as needed.
- Strain the punch through a fine-mesh sieve into a serving bowl or keep in the pot.
- Serve warm in mugs or glasses, garnished with thin apple slices, fresh thyme, and a cinnamon stick.
Notes
Do not boil the cider as it can make the flavor flat. Salt is recommended to balance the sweetness. For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the bourbon or rum. The punch can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat gently before serving. Avoid freezing as it may alter the texture of the caramel.
